Fans: Kimberlie Chase
Tribute: On May 22nd, Jim and Suzanne fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Ramble.

Suzanne shared,

"I said goodbye to Ramble this morning. After months of living his best life despite a struggling heart, his heart failed him, though his spirit stayed strong the to end.

He was always looking for his next meal and his next cookie. He was always smiling despite limbs that made me hurt just watching him struggle. He was gentle and sweet, wanting to be part of the action, especially if that action included food.

He spent most of his 17-ish years outside and alone. But he spent the last 7 months completely inside (he didn’t even like going outside to the bathroom but we kept the floor cleaner close and the washing machine busy). He ate countless meatballs, dog cookies, and anything else he could snack on between meals. He howled if he was alone but since my husband works from home, he was very rarely ever alone. He knew companionship and love, comfort, and joy.

At the end, the vet and I were talking about how difficult it is to rescue old and sick dogs. Saying goodbye never gets easier. But it occurred to me that I’ve gotten better at it. This morning I looked at Ramble and just knew that something serious was wrong. (At first I thought bloat) And when the vet told me that his stomach and lungs were filling with fluid due to a failing heart, I did not hang onto him despite the sadness. I understood the importance of “quality of life” and could make the decision in his best interest when the pain and discomfort would be too much. So the sadness is there in spades but the joy is still there too. And it’s still worth it."

Tribute: On May 17, 2022 Sylvia Ciampoli fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Khalani after battling congestive heart failure.

The day before Khalani enjoyed a trip to the park and a frosty paw treat. She played, napped and loved on her mom, Sylvia. She passed away peacefully in her sleep. Her sudden passing left her family heartbroken, "She left us too soon."

Khalani was part of the Seniors for Seniors program and was greatly loved and adored by Sylvia and her daughter, Eileen. Khalani came into Sylvia's home as a timid dog but in time grew to be a confident, happy and loving companion. Khalani truly received a second chance. Sylvia shares that Khalani loved to go for car rides and take trips to the park or go on walks. Her favorite pastime was watching the neighborhood go by from the window of the house. She would especially get excited when her human sister came to visit. Khalani remained a vibrant, energetic and loving dog till the very end. Sylvia stated that she would sit with her on the couch but Khalani would always want to check out what was going on outside. "She'd look out the window, her little curly pig tail wagging quickly at everything she saw." Khalani loved everyone she met and was the first to greet anyone coming into the home.

"I am grateful to Frosted Faces for Khalani and paying for her medical needs. Khalani brought joy and I loved her. She will be greatly missed."

Age upon Rescue: 8
Date of Rescue: October 20, 2020
Date of Passing: October 23rd, 2020
Family: Frosted Faces Foundation
Fans: Brenda Childress, Laura & Lisa Ponsor
Tribute: Today we fulfilled our promise to Calista.

Yesterday evening we gave her subcutaneous fluids, and pain and anti-nausea medication as prescribed. She had a soft constant moan, but tried to hold her head up for us as our reward to show she knew we were trying. As the night wore on her moans became louder and her breathing rate increased. Andy and I took turns laying by her, cleaned up vomit twice, packed her in ice because she seemed warm although her temperature was normal. Checking her gums and offering her water constantly. Could she be having a weird reaction to the gabapentin? It nearly sounded like it, and diagnostics a day earlier didn't point to a cause for such severe symptoms.

What Calista needed was beyond our scope of care and suffering became evident. Something was not right and this was more than renal failure. We took her to the vet where they did an ultrasound and found a mass in her cranial abdomen that could not be identified on x-rays. Truthfully, we couldn't let her go fast enough. What we were seeing wasn't her being hot, or having side effects from medication. She was clearly in pain after what we learned.

While I had to stay back at FFF as the only one on staff, Andy was with our girl Calista to let her go. We had a necropsy done afterwards and the vet found a hemorrhagic GI and masses on her spleen and liver. She said she looked like she was about to go into DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulapathy) which most likely caused the petechial hemorrhage she saw on the intestines. This could also explain the fast decline, as Calista seemed okay-ish/manageable the first couple of days.

It's confusing how a dog ends up dying in our care just days after becoming a stray. Calista was someone's girl for a very long time as she reflected all the love and kindness she has likely been shown for years. We were grateful that the shelter recognized that Calista was unwell and tried to exit her or offer humane euthanasia by Wednesday at close of business so she would not have to pass away alone in a concrete cell. Sometimes, after a family has loved a dog for all of her years, the one thing we are left to do as a rescue is the one thing the family cannot bear to imagine- let their devoted dog leave this world. I wish their familiar faces were the last she'd seen and that she was called by the name she knows in her final days.

We love you, Calista.

Fans: RZ, Bria T.
Tribute: Dale was brought into OC Shelter as a stray shockingly emaciated and matted. He had boogers and would try to bite when touched. We are not cat experts, but had a vacancy, so we agreed to dive in with fair warning from the shelter that Dale may be a very sick feral cat. We owe thanks to Camille Andreason for giving Dale his freedom ride to FFF from the shelter.

I can't tell you how happy I am that we took a chance on Dale. He was scared, but we held him so tightly our love overflowed, and he began to make biscuits on our shoulders and nudge our faces with his pink nose. We bathed him, picked the boogers off his body and snipped out the mats. We also trimmed his pointy nails.

Thanks to Rick Hoffman, Dale went to the vet right away. His labs and x-rays were not shocking. He was losing some protein in his urine, and his x-rays were a little tough to read because of how thin he was. We did a fast scan and nothing jumped out at the vet. There was a scant amount of fluid in his abdomen, which she warned us could increase as he got hydrated and ate more. His blood pressure was normal. We finally got a fecal sample and it tested positive for coccidia. We hospitalized Dale and he patiently accepted the care.

We gave Dale fluids at home and he was a great eater! He finished every meal! Everything about this guy was confusing! Was he just the worst stray ever and starving? Or were we missing a piece of the puzzle?

Right away Dale took a liking to a hidey hold in our bed frame. He snuck out at night and peed on Andy's clothes! We put a heating pad in the cubby and a thick fleece blanket. We put a washable potty pad right outside in case he didn't make it to the litter box. We also made a little water and food station nearby. We could always tell when Dale drank the water because it was dirty from his gunky mouth afterwards! He watched "The Crown" with us in the evenings tucked against our chests.

On Sunday evening, November 2nd, we found Dale deceased in his cubby hole. While I am not entirely opposed to letting an animal pass naturally as humans do, I am really sad that we had this naive thought that we were on the long slow road to recovery and did not do more for him and also, of course, that we weren't present as he crossed to tell him not to be scared and that we loved him.

Tribute: On September 16th Barbara fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Coco.

About 6 months ago Coco had a large mast cell develop on her thigh. Her bloodwork only showed an elevated SDMA so we went after it. Unfortunately we had to amputate her leg because of how deep the mass was, but Miss Coco rallied and went on living!

Barbara shared,

"Coco was doing very well after her surgery and I thought everything was behind us, but the tumor came up suddenly and the vet felt it was in a lymph node in her groin. She literally went from happy and active to unbearably sick within 3 days. It broke my heart.

She was the love of my life, quiet, sweet spirited, and always wanted to snuggle. I'm devastated, I miss her every minute of every day. She was my best friend! I have missed her terribly!

Thanks again for your wonderful help! I intend to get another baby after I recover from Coco."

Tribute: On December 5th, Kate fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Roscoe.

Kate shared,

"Roscoe made it to his 3rd Frostversary but his 3rd Gotcha Day was Dec 20th, and he sadly passed away on Dec 5th at FF HQ. All the vet staff was so kind and caring, trying to figure out why he was losing weight and health so fast. Roscoe had a lesion of some sort on or near his liver and part of his stomach, and lost 3 of his 9 lbs in less than 2 months. On his last day, after two days at HQ on fluids, he didn’t rally, and wanted to stay curled up. It was time.

Three years ago next week, I went to FFF to get a dog I saw on a Facebook post, Marco. He had been adopted that morning, so I had Alicia pick a couple of dogs that would be nice to my very old Mr. Magoo type Chihuahua, Pugsley. The second dog was Roscoe and he licked Pugsley and happily they trotted the trails and shared a treat. It always was that good, just two old gents getting along and being kind to each other.

Roscoe never shied away from new experiences, new dogs, new people, he was always ready to wag his way over for a pet or introduction. He was not picky about where he slept or what he ate, but one time with a Foster dog, he moved himself and his bed into my bathroom due to his perception of indignities.

He and Pugsley had two good years together and then last year when Pugsley died I brought in another FF, Honeybee, renamed Cleo. It was very smooth transition because Roscoe let her have her way in all things, and if something wasn’t right he would come and stare at me.

We had a nice little routine during the day, and me saying Dog Park! He would wake up and trot to the door to go visit his friends. At night he was happy to be tucked in and covered up and slept through the night.

As he became less active, I noticed his weight was going down pretty fast, and thought it was due to his pain from arthritis, and the vets at FFF helped by prescribing pain meds. Roscoe started to turn away from food more and more, and by his intake exam in mid November he was at 7.5 lbs, and the year before was at 11 lbs! Dr. Russell ordered ultrasound and a biopsy, but Roscoe was unable to hang on for results and a possible miracle.

He never ever made a sound until the night before he passed away, when he moaned a little. In three years he never whined, yelped, cried, barked or made any noise at all. To me that meant he was ready to go.

He was such a lovely, courtly and gentle buddy, and I miss him sitting next to my leg on the couch, with his head on my knee."

On March 20th, Mark and Kari fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face DiCaprio after battling heart disease.

Kari shared,

"With sad news, we had to let go of DiCaprio this morning. We know that is what was best and we are lucky to give him peace after many many good days.

We never get as long as we want with our pets, it is always too soon when we have to say goodbye!!

Our lives were made richer because we were lucky enough to have him in our life for as long as we did!!! We wrote up most of our memories of him and understand it’s a lot. But we wanted to share with all of you since we know you all love him as well.

The first photo is a picture I took of Mark while volunteering when staff told me we couldn’t adopt DiCaprio because someone else already was coming for him. I thought this was the last time I would see him. I was so sad, but then we found out he was all ours and on 10/28/21 we got to take him home!!"

Mark shared,

"We were told he only had about 2 months to live, but he made it 5 months and gained 3lbs. From 7lbs to 10lbs, I think mostly because Kari was so good about making sure he got his meds 3x a day! He got to go to the desert with us 2x, the beach, many wineries, a bike ride at Mission Bay, my mom got to pet him and hang out with him the day before he said 'good bye.' I gave him lots of petting, ear scratches, and love. He was a really good boy. We think we gave him the best last few months he could have had.

Some things we will remember about him:

-He had 3 hair cowlicks- 2 on the side of his neck and 1 on his chest

-He would sit on your foot

-He loved to be in your lap and he would put up with any uncomfortable position just to be in your lap

-Kari bought slings and he loved hanging out in it we would take him into the stores with us

-When he shook he would do it so hard he would shake himself off his feet and barely catch himself

-He was super chill almost all the time but when you had to encourage him to take his meds

-He couldn’t make it though the night without peeing, I used to hear him shake and get up to let him out before we figured out we could use pee pads by the door.

-Every time we would go though a drive through he would start barking. Or if you pulled up next to someone to talk, crazy barking! The first time I heard him bark was in the car a week after we got him.

One time we got Popeye's Chicken nuggets he climbed out of his car seat basket and had to get some.

We were the luckiest parents who lost a piece of our hearts today."

Family: Holly Buderus & Kawika Ohumukini
Fans: Robin, Sarah & Juneau, Lynn Petolicchio
Tribute: On December 31st, Kawika and Holly fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Flower.

Flower came to us blind, dog reactive, and in end stage renal failure. So many things working against her, and yet the cards were in her favor.

Volunteer Holly knows when to step up, and she climbed high on that foster pedestal when she stepped up as mom to Frosted Face Flower two months ago to get Flower out of the kennel environment. Kawika and Holly don't have any other dogs, so their home is a coveted place for dogs who are poorly socialized. Beyond that, they were a home for a dog who needed consistency for navigating a familiar space due to lack of a sight, and a soft place to land in her final days of life.

Holly did subcutaneous fluids every day for Flower's renal disease and supplements. She took her on walks as family dogs would do, and she slept on fancy big beds. On her final day, Holly realized Flower was acting lethargic and her temperature was low. We rushed her to San Diego Bay Animal Hospital where we discovered she had a pyometra. We had chosen not to spay her upon rescue due to her poor kidney values. We ran labs to find her creatinine was 9.1 and her BUN was 130. If you are familiar with dogs in kidney failure, these numbers usually mean one very sad thing- the end. Surgery was still not sensible, and our beautiful unique Flower was suffering.

Holly rushed to be at Flower's side to let her go and we thank the hospital for letting her be present. Holly shares, "The best little curly Q will never experience pain again. My heart is breaking, but I am so grateful to have met her and loved her. Thank you, Kelly, for trusting me to make Flower's final chapter a good one. Who could know it would be so short?"

Thank you to Kawika and Holly for being so strong and exceptionally selfless.

"I can’t believe I am having to write another one of these posts just 138 days after the one I did for our beloved MoMo…but here I am again, only 32 days after we took home our 3rd hospice boy, having to say goodbye to my sweet little boy Schnitzel in the most loving tribute I can write.

Schnitzel was by FAR the naughtiest boy we’ve had from FFF…so naughty that he had even ME second guessing my abilities to handle 4 dogs at once! I still remember writing that email to the FFF support group, telling them how overwhelmed I felt with this new supposedly “hospice” dog that I was POSITIVE was faking his heart failure, what with how energetic and playful he was! He was nonstop energy and just had to be center of attention, or else you’d hear the infamous “screams” he had masterfully developed to ensure he’d get a reaction 😂😂😂 he also loved to use this tactic to demand food and treats and was NOT afraid to use it! But he was such a good boy and once he received a few friendly squirts of water as a “hey we love you so you don’t need to scream,” he quickly learned he wasn’t going anywhere and knew he was finally at home, and voila, the screaming stopped 🥰

I am so so thankful that my dad was able to be with me when I picked up Schnitz from FFF on that fateful day, Jun 13, 2021. He had just flown in from Houston the night before, and even though he stated that I was “crazy” for taking on another dog, I know he was secretly proud of me and also excited to go visit the shelter that has brought us a total of 5 precious senior dogs (so far). My dad instantly bonded with Schnitz, whom he affectionately referred to as “Shitful,” a nickname that was well deserved (considering the amount of poop that boy could unload per day!!!). When I told my parents that Schnitz was going to have to be put down, they were both devastated…my mom was so upset she would never get to meet her grandpuppy and my dad choked up when he said “goodbye little shit” on Facetime when we were in the car at the vets 💔

Schnitz came to us as a hospice dog, with the most significant problem being heart failure. You wouldn’t have known it in the beginning, unless you were around long enough to hear his coughing become more and more persistent and intense as time went on even on medication. The coughing eventually lead to a perineal hernia, which was unrepairable due to his other health conditions (plus the surgery would fail due to his incessant coughing). We were told to just keep him as comfortable and happy as long as we could, and we were able to have a few more good days with him, filled with lots of snuggles and pets and allllll the scratches his little heart desired.

Yesterday, July 15, 2021, was the day that Schnitzel decided to tell us he was ready to meet his brother MoMo, Cory’s grandparents, and all the other loved ones who have left this world for something better ❤️ we told him we understood and we thanked him for the wonderful and truly unforgettable 32 days we had with him, which were filled with so much love, laughter, naughtiness (of course), and of course, the best Schnitzel kisses ever 🥰 San Diego Bay Animal Hospital: we can’t thank you enough for the compassion and love you showed our family during the most difficult decision and process we’ve had to go through yet, and we know Schnitz is forever grateful for allowing us all the time we needed with him to say our goodbyes.

He is, not was, the bestest boy, and we can’t wait to see him again one day, free of heart failure and any other illness, in his truest and naughtiest form ❤️ we love you so so so incredibly much Schnitz, we always will, and this is not goodbye, just “see you later” ❤️❤️❤️

We are thankful we could give Sweet Pinky Sue a little bit of peace in the short time that we had her in our lives. Her struggle was becoming more and more apparent and as hard as it was, we knew it was time to let her go.

More about our Sweet Pinky Sue as we knew her.

Pinky ended up having us wrapped around her pinky. It did not, however, start out this way. We had plenty of dogs, but when we saw her picture and learned that she was in stage 4 kidney failure and not longed for the world, we decided, why not, what’s one more dog, let's provide her a few days of comfort. And, here we are sixteen months later.

Pinky had an air about her in the way she meandered about her world. She was indifferent to most. She loved being outside, whether it be stifling hot, freezing cold and all degrees in between. If left to her own devices, she would be outside 24/7.

Pinky had beds everywhere on our deck and although she was very limited in her eyesight, she knew where they were and would move throughout the day as the sun moved or the weather got colder. If for some reason a bed got moved (even slightly), she would stand and wait for us to notice and move it back to its exact desired spot. It took some time but she learned that burying herself in the blankets (like a real chihuahua) would provide much needed warmth while being outside in this year's cold weather.

Ms Pinky arrived at our home with a growth on her belly that by itself weighed almost as much as she did and was quite near to dragging on the ground. We almost renamed her Eyore because it weighed her down so much that she sauntered around looking as if she was saying look at ol pooooor me. At first we thought she would have to live the rest of her life with “the beastly growth" but as her health continued to improve, it was determined that she was healthy enough to have it removed. BEST thing EVER—She found new sparks in her step.

She did not have the bark of a normal dog. She had the hoarse, low, loud bark of a normal sea lion. Initially, her sister dogs would look at us when she barked, probably wondering what the heck we brought home. Her bark earned her the occasional name of Sea Lion Pinky Sue.

Pinky had nary a tooth in her head but she packed a mean PSI. Any time we attempted to pick her up she quickly grabbed hold of a finger or two, and chomped down like a pair of vice grips. (It seriously did hurt). It was hard to get mad because she was just so damn cute. Because of her behavior, she was appropriately renamed Pinky Bitey Sue; however, many times she was called Dammit Pinky Bitey Sue. It took about nine months but I was able to gain her trust enough that I could pick her up knowing it was unlikely that she would bite. I could kiss on her and not fear that she would take out part of my nose or that I would lose an eye. This new improved behavior warranted another name change to, Not So Bitey Pinky Sue. Even though she came to permit us to hold her without incident, she was not fond of being held for too long. She was not into cuddling up for a good movie or anything else for that matter. Eventually over the last several months she acquiesced to being held and cuddled. I truly believe she knew that this would provide the comfort she needed as she was "winding down". Again, a name change was in order and her final name became, Sweet Pinky Sue.

Although her vision was very limited and she could hardly hear, without a doubt she knew when it was time to eat. It was like she miraculously regained her sight and could hear her food being prepared. She was always timely at being in her place for all meals.

What we loved about Sweet Pinky Sue is that as fragile as she looked, she never seemed needy and, good or bad, she did not demand constant attention or affection. We worked hard to win her trust and it took a lot of time, but it was on her time and that was ok. It was ok that she took her time to decide that she was ours and we were hers. Sweet Pinky Sue was a Warrior; I expect that was because she had to be to get along/survive in whatever was her previous life.

We are so grateful that she was our Warrior who fought hard to stay with us as long as she did.

Pinky, you will always have a place in our hearts and in our memories. Run free sweet girl, day and night, hot or cold, proudly bark like a sea lion-you deserve it all.

Frosted Faces, we are so grateful that we were the lucky ones to be chosen to be Sweet Pinky Sue's forever family. FF office/vet staff, thank you for being so caring and kind to our sweet little lady."

Tribute: On January 8th, Carly fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Dolly.

We are so grateful that Carly gave Dolly every opportunity to thrive, from treating her resistant infections post surgery, to adopting Dolly's long lost brother, Kenny, off the adoption floor of AFV to keep the siblings united. What a profound loss for everyone after such genuinely great care.

Carly shared,

"In November I adopted Dolly Pardon and Kenny Rodgers, my islands in the steam. They sailed away with me to Morro Bay, where they were able to finally decompress and recover from their medical issues. Dolly loved the beach so much she would kiss Kenny and try to make out with him during our walks. Last weekend I watched them play together for the first time.

When I adopted Dolly she had mammary masses that had to be removed. She had a tough time with the recovery and developed an antibiotic resistant infection. But she persevered and was finally feeling good. She gained 6 badly needed pounds. Two days ago she stopped eating. I brought her to the vet yesterday, and they found that her cancer had spread. We didn’t believe we could make her comfortable, so we helped her cross. Kenny was by her side. She will be missed and was truly loved during the short time I had her."

Tribute: 10 year old Cadence was surrendered to Downey Shelter on Monday, 10/26 by her family. They did not bother to completely fill out the relinquishment form and list her name so we named her. Yesterday staff were instructed to escort Cadence to medical for humane euthanasia, and Sal Valdepeña reached out to us for an exit plan. They have a caring vet in Dr. Jones at Downey, but not always access to the diagnostics these seniors deserve to get possible lifesaving care.

We reached out to FFF volunteers with one hour to coordinate a transport plan. Christie Forman, Sherry Bates, and Heather Osswald donated their time and fuel to do a transport relay to get Cadence down to Frosted Faces Foundation. Cathi Perez showed up to pull. Little did they know, they would also be sacrificing their hearts.

Cadence was much smaller than we all expected- a low rider! She arrived at FFF about 7:30pm last night. Cadence had a suspect pyometra due to discharge from her vulva and gigantic mammary masses. We know the phrase to never let a sun set on a pyometra. Given that the diagnosis was not certain and Cadence was eating aka catching hot dogs from her soft bed, her temperature was normal and whatever she had likely was brewing for awhile, we made the executive decision to wait 12 more hours to take her to our general practice.

This morning, volunteer Lynda Donato, drove Cadence into San Diego to be seen at San Diego Bay Animal Hospital. She gave her so many kisses and wished her good luck. Dr. Traversi sent us the x-rays to confirm, "Yup, she has a pyo." Her bloodwork was scary from infection, but she was going to be fine. After removing countless shockingly neglected large mammary masses in the last 6 years on our Frosted Faces, a pyo and mastectomy was going to be a breeze.

This afternoon we got the call that Cadence made it through surgery and was recovering well! Honestly, what a relief that her family decided she wasn't well and surrendered her to the shelter "just in time" to get care. By the way, Cadence is one of the lucky ones. If anyone reading this thinks you are going to surrender a dog to the shelter in this condition and he/she is going to be treated and live happily ever after- that is more than likely not the case. Typically a dog in Cadence's condition will be deemed irremediably suffering and will be euthanized. It is a miracle she got a shot at life.

I have to tell you though through so many tears, Cadence did not make it. This evening, Dr. Traversi called to let us know that Cadence coded after she was well awake. They did CPR and could not revive her.

Cadence needed her family to advocate for her not three days ago by simply getting her to the shelter for humane euthanasia (which only coincidentally turned into a rescue opportunity), but years ago when they were offered countless opportunities to spay her through discounted county programs or with their family vet. If Cadence would have been spayed, she never would have gotten these cancerous mammary masses, and certainly not this devastating pyometra. She could have lived for years beyond today.

Thank you to everyone who poured your hearts into Cadence's rescue and recovery. In the last two weeks we have invested thousands of dollars in three valiant surgeries and aftercare for three separate Frosted Faces who did not survive. I feel grateful that money itself can oftentimes give a Frosted Face a chance to live, because God knows there are times when no amount of money can keep our best friends here on Earth as we hold them tightly down against us making deals with God. The total for Cadence's care hovers at $3,000. I hate to cloud Cadence's memorial with this ask but we would like to recover these costs for the next Frosted Face. Call it the "Let's Go For It Fund," because so many of these abandoned dogs deserve a chance.

To Cadence, you were worth it. Our hearts bleed for your suffering and the abrupt end to your precious life that was not your fault. We did our best, I hope you were warmed by our love. Fly high.

"She had such weird habits 😊 She would pick a place to lay down and sleep, and she would make that her home for the next 6 months. Then randomly she would go to another spot and claim that spot for the next 6 months. We tried to remember each spot the last few years. 4. Maybe 5.

Her last spot was by the front door, her hair was the same color as the carpet, AND she was completely deaf. We almost stepped on her many times 🤣🤣🤣, but again, it was now her spot, we couldn’t move her if we tried.

When we first got her she would give us 'love nips' when we were petting her. Then, Finally! After a year of pets, she stopped. She begged for food like a dog. Lastly, she was a 'vulture cat' (thank you Jennifer for the term!) she would perch for hours and I’m sure she was just watching over her subjects, trying to will us to feed her!

We miss her so much, thank you for allowing us to be her family!"

We monitored his comfort level but at the rate it impacted him, I felt that I needed to start thinking about saying goodbye to Bobby. This was very hard.

Well, Bobby had the biggest eyes and he used them to communicate with us since he was mobility challenged. Even though Bobby was with us a short time, I felt a strong connection with him because of his eye contact with me.

Bobby passed over the Rainbow Bridge on June 2nd.

We buried him in a very serene and peaceful spot, by a tree we will know as Bobby’s tree."

She shared,

"My big guy, by best friend, Jetsan Gene aka #grumpyjg #pudgepudge came into my life November 2020 ✈️❤️ (FKA FF Gene)

I saw his adorable face on a freedom ride and requested him for the next hike. He wasn’t there, he had seizures that morning and stayed behind at HQ. At open house I finally met that cute scruffy, snotty face. It was love at first sight. That face, that one big eye, short little legs and big old feet melted my heart from day one. I had no intention of adopting and was really enjoying being a serial foster.

I tried to foster him immediately!!! But he had lots of adoption interest so it wasn’t necessary. Fast forward, he got sicker and was “quarantine Gene.” My foster at the time got adopted and when the stars aligned Gene got to come home with me!! Who knew kennel cough could lead to me getting the best boy in the world! Well it did, and my best friend entered my life.

His kennel cough cleared, gained weight, but unfortunately heart failure and seizures were ongoing. He hid in the kitchen for a week. Finally decided I wasn’t so scary.

So many sleepless nights of holding that sweet boy, wiping boogers and coddling him after seizures, I knew I couldn’t let him go. Several no-go adoption appointments came and went and that little grumpy face and those big ole feet wiggled their way into my heart forever. Absolutely one of the best decisions I’ve ever made was making Jet a lil_manz!! FF Gene became Jetsan Gene. Jetsan means king in Tibetan, he definitely was king!

I loved Jet from day one and he eventually decided I was ok too and finally he loved me back! He became such a mommas boy. I was his entire world, and he was mine.

Our first year together we had lots of fun!!! We traveled to FL often, up the CA coast, etc. Jet was such a grumpy and quirky little guy, hence #grumpyjg nickname. He absolutely hated the car. If only these dogs could tell us about their past. We worked so hard at car training, tried everything, nothing worked. Planes, trains, strollers all A-ok by Jet but not that car! I still can’t believe we did those road trips. I am so happy we fought through the car issues back then and shared so many wonderful experiences.

Jet also enjoyed brunch, Seaport, Petco park at the park, and our neighborhood park, Faultline. His favorite things in the world were slowly walking and sniffing every inch of HIS park and cuddling with mommy ❤️

Our second year together my big boy was battling many additional health issues, taking so many meds and it all started to really take a toll. He was an anxious guy that didn’t like change. As he aged, losing most hearing and vision, we became homebodies. It made him very happy!! All the cuddles, TV and chicken, whatever #pudgepudge wanted he got. We had so much quality time together, not so many adventures but so much time, love and laughter. He always had me laughing!! He had something to say about everything!! He’d grunt, groan and talk to me alllll the time! He was such an independent, opinionated finicky little old man, and I truly loved all of his quirks.

Jet was a reluctant 🤣 but good foster brother to FF’s Marnie, Leia, Pascal, Jenkins, and ASR Llama. In addition, he welcomed and said goodbye to two permanent family members, sisters FF Nikki and FF Jewel 💔🌈. It took a very long time but Jewel eventually became his true companion. One of the best things that could have happened for my anxious guy was having relaxed sweet Jewel as his constant for 14 months. He truly enjoyed her company, my beloved #jetel.

These last few months he lost mobility. He’d scoot around the house grunting to keep me updated. I’d carry him if he got frustrated and we got him a wheelchair for the park. He loved his wheels! Was he going to be a dog running around, never, but boy did he enjoy standing upright, going exactly where HE wanted to go and sniffing allllll the smells. He was a self-reliant dog and those wheels gave him his independence.

Jet was such a fighter. He always rallied, and rallied and rallied again. For the most part his seizures had been controlled. His last day they came back, severe and with an extremely poor prognosis I couldn’t ask him to rally anymore. One of the best gifts Jet gave me was staying calm and collected when I was a mess. We snuggled so hard and got to say our final goodbyes peacefully, him on my chest listening to everything I had to say, just happy to be cuddled up with mom ❤️

I can’t thank Frosted Faces enough for saving my boy, and for the amazing medical care he received. Jet was a difficult patient. This last year every vet visit involved a seizure with one leading to a heart event. The absolutely amazing Dr. Russell and staff handled every single one of Jets issues wonderfully, especially given Jets circumstances. Thank you ❤️

A huge thank you to his fans, Jen Davidson and Delia Haust ❤️

Jet is my very best friend. To say I’m heart broken is an understatement. I will miss him forever. My little #grumpyjg #pudgepudge is seriously the best, grumpiest, independent, quirky, lovable most unique guy in the world. It is so hard to imagine my life without him. Big guy, I hope you are running pain free in good health hanging with your sissies, I will miss you and love you forever my sweet boy ❤️🌈

Tribute: On November 5th we fulfilled our promise to Louisiana.

San Diego Humane Society transferred her with dozens of other dogs from Louisiana's shelter in preparation for Hurricane Delta. We exited Louisiana from San Diego Humane Society- Oceanside just days after they performed dental surgery on her. We owe thanks to Denise and Mike Reeves for transporting Louisiana to FFF.

The shelter covered their bases prior to the surgery and noted that all of her kidney values were elevated, but felt that her mouth was so infected that the benefit outweighed the risk. They spayed her on 10/16 and then dental surgery on 10/30. We exited her on 11/1. We noted she looked quiet and her temperature was a little low at 99, but she was still taking medications and eating. On Wednesday morning of 11/4 we opened FFF and her temperature was 92 degrees so we rushed her to College Animal Hospital where her kidney values had skyrocketed off the charts. We hospitalized her and they warmed her body. By Thursday afternoon she was struggling to breathe and maintain a temperature. Little Louisiana's body was shutting down, so we let her go.

I wish Louisiana's previously family had not neglected her dental health, even moreso, I wish she wasn't in the shelter system and ever felt a day of being unwanted. Everyone moved mountains for her, from flying her all of the way to California, investing hundreds in medical care that she had been denied all of her life, and opening up their hearts to make her feel special in waiting for family-- only to gain wings with not one day to shine.

We are so sorry, Little Lou.

Carly shared,

Over the last few days Kenny started vomiting, which progressed into no appetite and lethargy. I brought him to the emergency vet this morning. They found he was lethargic, dehydrated, high respiration, low blood pressure and had free fluid in the belly.  He had an ultrasound and blood run, was on oxygen and getting fluids while the doctors ran additional tests.

He had abdominal effusion on x-rays and ultrasound. This indicates fluid in the abdomen which likely was from peritonitis or a bleed. Based on his blood work he has low blood sugar, very high white blood cells, elevated kidney values.

The doctor relayed that given the severity of his condition, his age and breed, ‘I feel an infected cancerous mass would be a high likelihood. I feel euthanasia is a very appropriate and reasonable choice for Kenny.’”

He could not see and had issues with his back legs however he found his way to the water bowl and was first in the kitchen when food was being prepared. He would totter outside to sunbath on the deck and enjoyed his walks and sharing beds with his 4 brothers/sisters.

His dementia finally was causing too much confusion and pain. He was not able to rest even with medication. He no longer tottered around or enjoy cuddles and would just cry out. Looking through the photos we realize how much his little life had changed and with the kindness of Dr. Russell and Michelle, he was set free from his pain. We are broken hearted and miss him so much

. We would like to thank his sponsor and all at FF for their support."

When we rescued Etsy it appeared one lung lobe was collapsed. We hit her with various antibiotics and steroids, and nothing seemed to improve it so we were to assume it was lung cancer.

Her mom did such a good job giving her baths and even dressed her in full wardrobe with bows too! Etsy came to us with pretty large mammary masses that were ready to bust, and it came to a point this week where they ulcerated. Surgery was not sensible with her lung cancer, and the CCD her mom was witnessing at night was just one more ailment that helped is make this oh-so difficult final decision.

Susie shared,

"Today, we put our little granny Etsy to rest. She was my first hospice dog and it wasn't easy as I navigated through her issues and my ability to care for her. However, I am grateful that I had this sweet girl for the past 2 months. She was spunky and had a great little personality. Thank you Frosted Faces Foundation and to the support team for all your help. We will miss this face."

Tootsie was well loved by both of her parents, and unfortunately her mom passed away earlier this year. It was clear Tootsie's dad mourned the loss of his lifelong companion, and poor Tootsie only got older and suffered from CCD. She paced and paced, inconsolable if you tried to hold her before she rested on her own.

Tootsie's dad surrendered her back to FFF, afraid to make the decision to end her life prematurely knowing how much his late wife loved her. We tried to determine if she could live more days comfortably while managed differently, but it was not the case.

Tootsie was confused and scared. Volunteers, John and Mari walked with Tootsie at the beach, and volunteer Jodi stroked sweet Tootsie on the FFF patio for hours until she settled on her last days.

We ultimately had to let Tootsie go because it was the right thing to do. Andy held her as Dr. D quieted Tootsie's heart. We called Tootsie's dad to let him know his girl was gone, and he was grateful. Her clay paw print rests in our center garden now. Not everything we do is so black and white, nor rainbows and sunshine. I do believe a lot of people loved Tootsie and wanted what was best for her. She lived a full, beautiful life with a dignified passing.

Loretta entered the shelter as a stray with a whole host of problems, but primarily terrible dental disease and her eyes were diseased from entropion, dry eye, and cataracts, which led to glaucoma and ulcers. We did surgery at the beginning of December to enucleate her painful, non-visual eyes, and also dental surgery. X-rays of her chest had showed a broncho-interstitial pattern which is pretty common in many of our seniors. She seemed to be healing well, but then a series of x-rays over the course of last week showed progression of likely aspiration pneumonia that we were trying to treat. In the end, Loretta let us know she could not fight and stopped breathing at the vet during care.

Loretta felt fierce love the last 4 weeks of her life, from a new fresh groom to two different foster families who treated her as the newborn baby in their lives. She got so many cuddles, she met some farm animals, and ate some really good food! Even for that 2 weeks that her eyes were enucleated, so much of it she seemed more comfortable and they healed so well.

We did our best for you, Loretta. We love you.

"After 18 months, and one old age issue after another, I finally set Reggie free from his tired, painful body on June 24th.

When Reggie and I first teamed up, he was blind in one eye, and pretty deaf, but I can whistle and we learned to understand each other.

The first thing I had to learn was that Reggie was nobody’s lap dog. He was grumpy, and not fond of being touched. On occasion, he would permit me to scratch behind his ears, and (once he lost all his hearing and most of his eyesight), liked to sit with his butt touching me, so he knew where I was. It was scary for him to feel alone, but I’m retired and was almost always there.

He never kissed anyone, but gave the best smiles. I miss the happy dance he would do anytime I walked in the door. He loved to ride in the car, and we often just drove around so he could have that joy.

I asked my son to describe Reggie for his final tribute, and he said, 'Like Oscar the Grouch, but bitey.' We laughed because it was true, and because we loved him for who he was, an old dog who sometimes let the puppy in him come out when he was happy.

I would not have traded Reggie for anything and I hope the puppy in him is finally free."

Tribute: On May 25th, Valerie and John fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Monet after battling kidney disease.

They shared,

"Our spunky, quirky little Monet boy crossed over the Rainbow Bridge early on Wednesday morning. In the year and a half we had him, he had fought his way back several times from different bouts of illness but this time was different and we knew that it was time to let him go. We petted and kissed him so that he knew mommy and daddy were there. (He was nearly blind and deaf).

I miss him SO much. I keep thinking I hear his little voice and the clickety clack of his paws on our floor. This is the last picture I took of him. He is wearing my favorite sweater that I thought showed how handsome and adorable he was as well as represented his unique personality.

He is our baby boy forever. We love you Monet. "

Tribute: On September 7th, Autumn fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face McCoy. He could no longer hold himself up and she could not give him the dignity he deserved after trying pain medication and even a wheelchair.

Autumn shared,

"We are devastated and miss him so much. He was such a special dog and the definition of loyal. He was so loving and stubborn, he fit right into our family of Tauruses. It definitely feels there is a hole without him and I keep getting the impulse to reach down to pet him or snuggle closer to him in bed at night before I remember he’s not there.

Thank you so much for all you and Andy do for senior dogs. I had a classmate from high school reach out on social media and let me know that McCoy inspired her to adopt her own senior from FFF. I really believe the best way to honor his memory is to continue spreading the word about the joy of senior dogs so this was the most comforting news we could have heard.

Hopefully when the some of the pain heals and we are back in California we can adopt from FFF again. The love and happiness he brought into our lives was worth a thousand times over the challenges of caring for him and the pain of losing him."

Tribute: On March 24th, Julie and Andre fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Twiglette.

Julie shared,

"On impulse this little gal came home with me last fall. I was so worried our Buster boy I would be mean to her, but instead Buster must’ve thought of her as a Mighty Mouse whom he stayed clear of.

We immediately named her little twig, Twiglette because of her funny little twiggy legs. She had a certain distinct sound, you didn’t have to see her, but heard her little toenails clicking on the tile. Every time we watched her walk, sometimes run, we giggled.

Twiglett loved going for her afternoon walk in the doggie stroller, she would stand up the whole time peering out the window.

On Wednesday she was having a hard time breathing. Thanks to FFF we were able to get her into College for a check up. We were not expecting to hear that it was her time. I am extremely grateful for my husband who had to do all the driving that day and who was with her to rub her little neck when she left us.

We are also extremely grateful to FFF for rescuing her and allowing us to care for her, her last few months.

We will miss her scurrying around the kitchen!

We will miss her snuggling with us on the couch!

We love you 'Little Twig!'

Tribute: On March 8th, Natalie and her girls fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Gopher after battling kidney disease.

Natalie shares,

"We had to say goodbye to Gopher. Even though we knew his time with with us would be short, this special guy became a very important part of our family.

He was the best boy, always gentle and cuddly. We enjoyed lots of walks, where he would snuffle about and kick the ground after he marked (so cute!). He claimed the loveseat as his own and hogged Claudia's bed at night. He liked to sleep late, and when he got up he would come to my desk to say good morning, giant tail wagging. He always gave Cecilia kisses.

Letting him go was heartbreaking, but I am so proud of my girls for all the love and compassion they showed him over the four months we had him.

Thank you, Frosted Faces, for the important work you do with senior and hospice dogs, and for giving us Gopher and supporting him and us during our time together."
