Tribute: On October 3rd, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Julie Andrews.

We actually rescued Julie the same day she passed away. Inland Valley Humane Society sent us a list of seniors they needed rescued and we agreed to all of them. IVHS transported all of the dogs straight to us, which helps so much!

A little later in the day, we noticed that Julie was cold and lethargic, so we rushed her into the vet room to be examined. We quickly ran labs, and scanned her heart and abdomen with an ultrasound probe. We do everything we can within reason to understand what is wrong with a dog and learn how to treat them. Meanwhile, Julie became dyspneic and agonal, so we transferred her to surgery for masked oxygen on a heating pad, stabilized her and placed an IV catheter. The assessment is below. 😞

1. IH labs:

- HCT 19.1%

- Neutrophilia 43K

- Monocytosis 3.3K

- PLT 60K

2. Send out 4DX, fecal

3. FBR:

- Cardiac silhouette small on VHS r/o dehydration

- Stomach large and gas filled

- Opacity on R lateral and peripherally on VD r/o mild pleural effusion

4. Started fluids at maintenance 5mls hr through fluid line warmer

5. TFAST: pleural effusion cardiac chamber enlargement, large thrombus in ascending aorta, fluid tapped - pink tinged looks like transudate or modified, not bld or purulent

6. AFAST: kidneys looks severely degenerated

Poor Julie was not destined for this world any longer. All of the staff gathered around her to send her to heaven. 💔

Tribute: On December 1st, we fulfilled our promise to Bruce Melville.

A kind citizen found Bruce roaming around Valley Center. She posted on all the "Lost & Found sites and had him scanned for a microchip where she learned his name was Bruce, and he was microchipped back in December 2012, so he's at least 12 years old. He went to the shelter to serve his time, but was not claimed, so we claimed him.

Bruce was diagnosed with prostate cancer upon arrival and after an echo we also put him on heart medicine. Bruce got to go to the pumpkin patch, was a rockstar in play groups, and he got to go on a Frosted Fling with Theresa Brown and Mark Vardakas. Based on the condition in which he was found, this was probably the first time Bruce lived in a home.

On Sunday, he skipped both of his meals and seemed pretty quiet, so we brought him over to watch TV with us. We both noticed he was kind of grunting and breathing a little fast, although resting comfortably on the couch sleeping. His resp rate was 50, so we did some quick x-rays. It was late, but Dr. Russell graciously looked at them from home and shared that he thought he had cancer in his lungs.

Given his fast breathing, we took him to Poway ER where they put him in oxygen. His spo2 was 80 and the vet agreed Bruce was not in heart failure, nor did the pattern look like pneumonia. We would have done anything to treat him. The last rule out was cancer, and it made sense after his ultrasound and echo last week confirming cancer of his prostate. Andy and I held him as he passed away. 😞

All of the volunteers here at FFF loved Bruce and his passing hit them hard. The conclusion was that it seems there is not enough time to love all the homeless dogs here at FFF sufficiently, not knowing who we could lose next. The following day, we found a lot of our Volunteer Shift Leads slowing down a little, spending more time just enjoying the dogs in the yards, and reflecting. I just want to thank everyone who carries this responsibility of cleaning up after, loving on, and rehoming the Frosted Faces with us. It's not for the faint of heart, and we so appreciate you. Bruce was loved well, he was safe, provided comfort care, and given a dignified passing. He had all of us as a family. ❤

We first learned about Jeep through our Frosted Funding program. Jeep was very itchy and so was his mom, so they wanted to have it addressed at the vet, but did not use a computer. With the help of our Communication Specialist, Laura, Jeep's mom filled out the application for help together. Enter Andy, who handles coordinating payments to clinics. He worked with Jeep's clinic to make sure the diagnostics and treatment plan was reasonable, and covered $500 for his care.

A couple weeks later, Jeep's mom showed up at FFF and said that she could not take care of Jeep anymore, and it was clear there was more going on for her than circumstances with Jeep's care that FFF could not improve. Surrender was urgent and necessary.

We did bloodwork and x-rays upon surrender, learning that Jeep was in stage 3 kidney failure. I don't know if you have met our new veterinarian yet, but she is amazing. Dr. Oviedo offered to take Jeep home for a Frosted Fling, and she unfortunately, ended up being his final family. On November 16th, Lauren and John fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Jeep after many days of supportive care that no longer bought him quality days.

They shared,

"On paper, Jeep was a 14Y rat terrier with kidney failure, hypertension, no teeth, and 1 testicle. In reality, he was a tiny ladies man with a gentle spirit and a heart of gold. He came to spend the last couple weeks of his life at our house, where he ate chicken and sausage and cuddled on a heated blanket and marked all the trees he could. He enjoyed being my shadow at work, sitting at my feet while I was doing surgery and sitting in my lap while I was writing exam notes. We will miss his gummy old man bark and his sweet spirit. He was a good dog and I am really grateful to Frosted Faces, who took the time and resources to love this senior pet for the best of his life. We will miss you, Jeepers Keepers."
