Tribute: On February 17th, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Winona.

Winona lived most of her time on-site being loved well by volunteers like Katie Hamel, Brenna Haller, Mary Arkwright, and was given extra love by the vet techs. She got to go on a Frosted Fling with Sue King, she slept on the Smíšek side of the house upon her return, where she got on a routine. In her last days, we came to understand that her liver mass was growing and she was not long for this world.

Jade and Sam offered to take her home to give her the final family.

They shared,

"From the moment we met Winona, she captured our hearts. She was the sweetest, most gentle soul, and from day one, it was clear she belonged with us. She enjoyed the car ride from FFF to our home, never once complaining—just quietly taking in the world around her.

When we arrived, she was greeted by our pack, and with wagging tails and curious sniffs, she was welcomed as one of their own. Winona, we quickly learned, had a love for food unlike any other. She finished her lunch and immediately asked for more. Dinner came, and she eagerly ate, only to look up as if to say, Is there any more? And when we began cooking our own meal, her nose twitched, her eyes widened, and with quiet determination, she made her way to the kitchen, hoping for just a taste. — with Jade Babbitt.

She was equally content nestled in our laps or wandering the house, exploring her new home. We always keep three water bowls—one short, one medium, and one tall—ready for our pack. Normally, CCD can make simple things like finding water a challenge, but Winona turned it into a game. She’d take a long drink from the tallest bowl, do a little circle, find the medium one, and sip again, then complete another turn to drink from the smallest bowl. We couldn’t help but laugh every time she did it.

That night, we decided on a little ice cream outing, and Winona happily came along for the ride. When it was time for bed, she got the best spot in the house and slept peacefully through most of the night—except for when Jade, ever convinced that everyone is cold, bundled her up in blankets until she got a little too warm.

Sunday morning started with a good breakfast—and a little extra chicken, of course. We loaded everyone into the car for a trip to Jade’s parents’ house. While some of the others were off for grooming, Winona basked in the love of family, feeling the soft grass beneath her paws and the warmth of the midday sun on her fur. She even got to taste some Wagyu beef—talk about spoiled!

That evening, she soaked up every moment—dinner in our laps, extra treats, endless love. Everything felt perfect.

But as midnight came, we saw signs that her body was struggling. The large mass on her liver was taking its toll. With the support of FFF, we were able to get her seen today, but despite every effort, Winona’s journey came to an end. She passed peacefully, surrounded by those who loved her—FFF staff and us, her family.

Winona, thank you for choosing us. Thank you for allowing us to love you fully and unconditionally, for sharing your light with us, even if only for a short time. In our home, every new addition to the Babbit Pack hears the same promise:

"You are ours, and we are yours."

And so, sweet girl, you are ours forever.

Tribute: On February 10th, Jim and Robin fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Marvin.

They shared,

"Life throws things at you that sometimes you just can’t understand. February 10th was a day like that for us. We are profoundly distressed and in disbelief to share that Marvin (Little Guy) died suddenly.

He became ill with vomiting and a bit of lethargy by late morning on February 10. This after a normal breakfast and a walk. We had him to our vet by 2pm. He was hypothermic and his gums were pale. They rushed to warm him and give him IV fluids. His X-rays were negative and his bloodwork had only slight abnormals. What was going on was not clear. We stayed at the vet for news. By 3pm, we were updated his temp was climbing, antibiotics and he was moving around a bit more. We asked to see him as soon as possible. Shortly by 4pm, the vet came in to tell us he had become restless and suddenly stopped breathing. They did CPR and tried to revive him with no success. The words coming out of the vets mouth didn’t seem possible and still don’t. Marvin was not even 5 years old. It’s difficult that there are no clear answers. Poisons and toxins make no sense as he nothing was disturbed in the house and he was never outside unattended. Whatever it was though, it had to be catastrophic.

We adopted Marvin on January 16 after losing both FF Nash and our other pup, Sun, around the holidays. We did not expect to adopt a new dog so soon. But Marvin happened along and it seemed like we all needed each other. He has been a joy to have around our home in the short time that we knew him. He has been adjusting quickly and was nothing short of being a goofball. We have loved on him so much that he looked annoyed at times. We truly believed that he was sent to us by Nash and Sun. He and our cat Elroy were becoming friends.

Marvin touched us profoundly in the short time we knew him. We are struggling right now. But immensely grateful to have known him."

"I opened the box with your plaster paw print in it today. Tears fells instantly. I told your other mommy, “I didn’t need this. These little footprints have already been permanently stamped on my heart”. It’s true. I carry you there just like I carried you in my arms…to your warm breakfast, your warm bed and your warm bath. You put up with everything. Tiny sweaters, tiny pants, tiny pills. Everything small except your capacity to make us love you. I miss your tufts of goat hair and your little cow spots on tummy. I miss you crunching your miniature bits of kibble of chicken and the musical tinkle of your Frosted Faces tag on your elevated bowl. Your Other Mother noticed everything, including that her teensy girl would be more comfortable eating if she could her little head up. I suspect it was extra heavy carrying our 10,000 kisses on top of it.

There was not one time you you were picked up or put down without one being adding to the pile. Not surprising, as your shelter notes literally diagnosed you with sweetness. We had you for two whole days before you told us your name, then those long lashed, winky little eyes said it all. Winky Bug, Winks, Winkerbelle, Tinky Winky, Stinky Winky. Ohhhh. There are those tears again. My beautiful Gimel. I spun the dreidel and won it all. You were the both light and the miracle of our Hanukkah (in your tiny Christmas sweater). While our time together will never have been enough, the joy you brought will live with us forever. Whether asleep in your bed or up in the heavens sniffing every star, you will always be surrounded by your mommy’s unending love Winky Bug Randall-Silhan. It is the Way."
