Tribute: On August 26th, Barq received his angel wings.

Barq's story began when he was found abandoned, tied to a tree with a box of supplies, in the Mission Viejo area. The shelter did some detective work, discovered that his previous owners had just sold their home in Newport Beach. Christina Orlovsky had the honor of giving him his freedom ride to FFF. We named him "Barq" because we rescued him on National Rootbeer Day.

Little Barq was so stressed during nap time in his kennel, so he spent a lot of time out in the office and going on outings. When Callie came for a foster dog, she asked who needed it most, and Barq was our #1 pick! She agreed!

Callie shared,

"Barq and I didn't get enough time together, but under a sometimes tough exterior was a sweet boy who wanted to be loved and loved he was. Upon bringing Barq home it was clear he loved my bedroom most, so I allowed him to run the show and get cozy - my pile of bed pillows being his favorite place to snooze most of the day. He also very much loved the basket of towels in my bathroom, which I gladly let him sleep in.

Barq was my first challenging experience with a dog who likely had a traumatizing past that affected how he reacted to certain things (I am so lucky right?! I have had the pleasure of adopting/parenting many rescues). With some coaching from Kelly (and some fellow FFF friends) I was able to see past the attitude he sometimes gave me and combat it with compassion and love. In hindsight I'd do anything to hear him snarl at me for trying to move my own sleeping position and wake him from his own slumber LOL. I quickly learned what worked for him and what wouldn't and abided by his rules as he got settled. I will never forget the joy I felt when I saw him wag his tail for the first time! Or when he hopped up out of bed when I said "walk". His smile on walks/car rides was so fulfilling I want to jar up that emotion and carry it with me.

We had so many wonderful moments together. The first night we watched the Taylor Swift Eras movie together (a right of passage for all my Flings). He loved it! I took him on long walks around the city. He saw Petco Park and came to Trivia night with all my friends. He was my little man (fulfilling a piece I lost when my soul dog Indy passed last Nov) and with each day he warmed up to me. Curling up with me, quickly sneaking a kiss, and jumping into my lap while I worked (he even met some coworkers!) are some of my fondest memories. Our last day together we spent the morning cuddling. I miss him dearly and I hope he knows how much I loved him."

Tribute: On September 10th, Sue fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Helena.

She shared,

"Helena was described to me as a super sad looking poodle. I picked her up for a Fling 2 days after her arrival. I was told she was stiff, wobbly and slept a lot. Helena was a rock star eater, and with that her mobility improved. I called her Itty Bitty as her body seemed frail and overly thin. As the days passed, she gave signs that she had CCD. Her intake exam 6 days later revealed she had stage 2 kidney disease, a UTI, and very high pressure In her left eye. Sometimes those medical issues can cause confusion, and she was started on appropriate meds. Unfortunately, it did not change her behavior. Helena wandered most of the day, sometimes crying out when she got stuck behind a door, or chair. She only allowed me to hold her briefly until she struggled to get down. The positives were that she ate well and slept through the night. A recheck of her eye pressure just over a week later indicated that the high pressure had not changed. The usual procedure for continued high pressure, which is extremely painful, is eye enucleation. With Helena’s CCD it didn't make sense to put her through that. Also, despite the fact that I was feeding Helena like she was a 10 lb dog (rather than 6) and 4 times a day, she actually had lost weight. I took her back home to spoil her with yummy things I cooked like chicken, ground turkey, and pork roast. I don’t know if she ever had a birthday celebration in her past, so for her last night, I baked her a cake, and she had bacon flavored doggie ice cream. She ate Every. Last. Bite. I cuddled her as much as she would let me those last 3 days.

Itty Bitty Helena passed away peacefully as I held her tightly with tears in my eyes. I cried not for me, but for her. Where was her family? Had they been the ones that had turned her into the shelter as a stray? Left her when she needed them most? We’ll never know. I asked for her ashes and paw print, because she deserved to belong to somebody at the end of her life. Rest in paradise Itty Bitty, I am honored to have been your somebody."
